What is Citation Source Intelligence?

Citation Source Intelligence answers a question that traditional SEO tools cannot: where are AI models actually learning about your niche, and is your brand part of that conversation?

When AI models like Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Gemini answer a query about your industry, they pull from a specific mix of source types — community forums, video platforms, review sites, authoritative publications, and general web content. The distribution of that source mix, and whether your brand appears in each category, directly affects how often AI mentions you.

Citation Source Intelligence lives inside the Analytics section of your sidebar. Click the Citation Sources tab at the top of the Analytics page to access it.

The 5 source categories

Every citation in your niche is classified into one of five source types. Understanding which categories dominate your space tells you where to invest your citation-building effort.

Which category dominates your niche?

B2B SaaS niches are often dominated by Review and Community sources. Media and publishing niches skew heavily toward Authority sources. Consumer products tend to have strong Video representation. Your Citation Source Breakdown chart shows the actual distribution for your niche.

Citation Gap Score

The Citation Gap Score is displayed as a badge in the header of the Citation Source Intelligence card. It measures how many more citation appearances your competitors are accumulating across source categories where your brand is absent.

No Gap

Your citation count matches or exceeds competitors in tracked source categories. Maintain your current strategy.

Gap: 1–19

Competitors have a moderate citation edge. Target the highest-citation gap source first to close the gap efficiently.

Gap: 20+

AI models are building a mental model of your niche that systematically excludes your brand. Immediate action is needed.

A single high-quality mention on a heavily cited source page can meaningfully shift your citation frequency across all AI platforms — because these source pages are repeatedly pulled into AI context windows for your topic.

Competitor Citation Leaders table

Below the source breakdown chart, the Competitor Citation Leaders table lists the specific external pages that are receiving the most citations from AI models in your niche — but where your brand is not mentioned.

Each row in the table shows:

  • External Page — the domain and full URL of the heavily-cited source, clickable to open the live page
  • Type — the source category badge (Community/Social, Video, Review, Authority, or General)
  • Citations Received — how many times AI models pulled this page as a citation for queries in your tracked keyword set
  • Action Needed — the Earn a Mention button that opens your targeted outreach strategy

Prioritize by citation volume

Sort your attention by the Citations Received column. A page cited 12 times is far more valuable to target than a page cited once. Getting a mention on the highest-citation pages gives your brand the best probability of appearing in AI answers.

Earn a Mention workflow

Clicking Earn a Mention on any gap row opens a modal with a complete, ready-to-use outreach strategy for that specific page and source type.

Identify your highest-leverage gap

In the Competitor Citation Leaders table, find the row with the highest Citations Received count. This is the page where getting a mention will have the greatest immediate impact on your AI citation frequency.

Click Earn a Mention

The outreach strategy modal opens, pre-loaded with a category-specific Action Plan and an editable Outreach Template. Your brand name is already filled in.

Review the Action Plan

The 3-step Action Plan is tailored to the source type — for example, Reddit gaps show community engagement tactics, while G2 gaps show review profile optimization steps. Follow the steps in order before sending outreach.

Customize the Outreach Template

Edit the template directly in the modal. Replace all [bracketed placeholders] with real names, specific references to the content, and your unique value-add. The template is editable text — do not send it verbatim.

Copy and send

Click "Copy Template" to copy your edited message, then click "Open Source" to navigate directly to the target page to take action.

Outreach strategies by source category

Each source category requires a fundamentally different approach. The modal selects the right strategy automatically, but understanding the logic behind each one helps you execute more effectively.

Community/SocialReddit, LinkedIn, Quora

Community platforms penalize overt self-promotion. The only sustainable strategy is genuine contribution. Lead with expertise, not your brand.

  • On Reddit: answer 5–10 questions in your niche without mentioning your brand before ever introducing it
  • On LinkedIn: engage with the specific post that is being cited before pitching a conversation
  • Always disclose your affiliation when mentioning your brand — platforms and AI models both reward transparency
VideoYouTube, Vimeo

Video citations are driven by creator relationships. A single mention in a well-watched video on your topic can generate sustained AI citations because the transcript is repeatedly indexed.

  • Comment on the cited video with a substantive, helpful insight to get noticed by the creator
  • Pitch a collaboration or expert commentary for a future video covering the same topic
  • Create your own competing video on the same topic — this can earn parallel citations independently
ReviewG2, Capterra, Trustpilot

Review platform gaps are usually solved through profile optimization and structured review campaigns, not outreach to the platform itself. Your control is over your own profile and your customers.

  • Claim and fully complete your vendor profile — match your entity description exactly to your Schema.org markup
  • Add all relevant comparison categories, use-case tags, and integration listings so you appear in the right queries
  • Run a targeted review collection campaign to customers in the specific segment the cited comparison covers
AuthorityWikipedia, Forbes, industry publications

Authority citations are the hardest to earn but carry the most weight. Wikipedia specifically requires documented notability from independent sources before your brand can be mentioned.

  • For Wikipedia: build third-party press coverage first, then contribute factual, non-promotional additions to category articles citing those sources
  • For publications: pitch a follow-up story or exclusive data study — journalists value unique data above all
  • Build a HARO or journalist outreach list for top publications in your niche for ongoing citation opportunities
GeneralBlogs, news sites, other web content

General source gaps are best addressed by creating superior competing content on your own domain and by direct outreach to the page author for a mention or link.

  • Review the cited page to understand why AI is referencing it — what question does it answer more thoroughly than you?
  • Identify a comment section, author contact, or community angle to contribute to the existing page
  • Create a deeper, more authoritative version of the same content on your own site to earn parallel citations

    Share of Voice dashboard — shows your overall % of AI citations versus competitors across all keywords. High gap score in Citation Sources often correlates with low SOV.

    Platform Breakdown — shows which AI platforms you are weakest on. Cross-reference this with your source gaps: if you are weakest on Perplexity and your top gap is Community/Social, Reddit outreach is your highest-leverage play because Perplexity heavily indexes live community content.

    Sentiment Trend — if you close citation gaps on Review platforms, you may also see your positive sentiment score improve because review content skews toward structured, verifiable claims.
