AEO vs SEO

Traditional SEO Tools Are Blind to AI Search. Here's Proof.

We ran the same website through Ahrefs, Semrush, and RankAsAnswer. The results revealed a massive blind spot in traditional SEO tooling that most marketers don't know exists.

The experiment

We took a real SaaS company website — a well-optimized site with solid domain authority (DA 52), ranking on page 1 for several competitive keywords, with a clean technical SEO bill of health from both Ahrefs and Semrush.

Then we asked a simple question: does any of this tell us whether this website gets cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

We ran the site through three tools: Ahrefs, Semrush, and RankAsAnswer. The contrast in what each tool could measure was striking.

What traditional tools found

Ahrefs

Score: A (97/100 Site Health)

What it measured

  • Domain Rating: 52
  • Referring domains: 847
  • No broken links
  • Good Core Web Vitals
  • Ranking for 1,200+ keywords

What it couldn't tell us

Could not assess AI citation readiness

Semrush

Score: 97/100 Site Health

What it measured

  • Authority Score: 31
  • Organic traffic: ~4,200/mo estimated
  • Clean site audit — minimal issues
  • Ranking competitor gap identified

What it couldn't tell us

No Schema quality assessment, no AEO scoring

What RankAsAnswer found that they all missed

When we ran the same site through RankAsAnswer, a completely different picture emerged:

A site that Ahrefs and Semrush both gave near-perfect health scores scored 38/100 for AI citation readiness. It had virtually no chance of being cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity on its target queries — despite ranking well in traditional search.

The AI visibility gap

This is what we call the “AI visibility gap” — the delta between a site's traditional SEO performance and its AI citation readiness. In our analysis of hundreds of well-optimized sites, the average gap is surprisingly large:

Site typeAvg. SEO health scoreAvg. AEO score
SaaS / B2B91/10037/100 (54 point gap)
E-commerce88/10041/100 (47 point gap)
Media / Publishing85/10049/100 (36 point gap)
Healthcare90/10044/100 (46 point gap)

The gap is an opportunity, not a crisis

Because most well-optimized sites have a large AEO gap, the companies that close it first gain a significant competitive advantage. The window for early-mover advantage in AEO is still open — but it won't be for long.

What this means for your content strategy

Traditional SEO tools will tell you your site is healthy while AI answer engines quietly ignore you. The only way to know your true AI visibility is to measure it with a tool designed for that purpose.

Start with your 5-10 highest-traffic pages. Audit them for AEO gaps. The fixes are usually fast — Schema generation, heading restructuring, intro rewrites. But you can't fix what you can't measure.
