Why Tracking AI Rankings by Engine Misses the Entire Point

Tracking 'how you rank in ChatGPT vs Perplexity' is the wrong mental model. The right question is: which INTENT are you winning, and are you winning it consistently across ALL engines?

The wrong mental model that is costing you citations

The prevailing approach to AI search measurement is: check how you appear in ChatGPT, check how you appear in Perplexity, check how you appear in Gemini, compare the three. This is the engine-centric model — treating each AI platform as an equivalent of a separate search engine with its own ranking system.
