E-E-A-T in the Age of AI Search: A Practical Guide for 2025

Feb 16, 202510 min read

Google's E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) isn't just for Google anymore. Learn how AI models evaluate the same signals.

What is E-E-A-T?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Google introduced this framework in its Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines as a way to assess the quality and credibility of web content.

What most marketers haven't realized yet: AI answer engines apply strikingly similar evaluation criteria when deciding which sources to cite. The same signals that make Google trust your content make ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini trust it too.

E-E-A-T vs E-A-T

Google added the first "E" (Experience) in December 2022, elevating first-hand experience as a distinct signal. AI models similarly weight experiential content — case studies, original data, first-person accounts — over purely aggregated information.

Experience: first-hand signals

Experience refers to content demonstrating that the author has actually done the thing they are writing about. For AI citation, this manifests as:

  • ▸Original data, screenshots, or results from hands-on testing
  • ▸Case studies with specific, attributable outcomes
  • ▸Author bios that mention real professional experience
  • ▸Content that acknowledges limitations and edge cases (a marker of real experience)

Content that reads like it was assembled from other sources without adding original insight is exactly what AI models are trained to deprioritize. The "me too" article that summarizes what 10 other articles already said earns no citations.

Expertise: demonstrating domain depth

Expertise is demonstrated through breadth of coverage within a domain, correct use of technical terminology, and the presence of content across a consistent topic area. AI models evaluate expertise at the domain level, not just the page level.

A single authoritative article on a topic is less trustworthy to AI than a domain with 20 interlinked, substantive articles covering the same topic from multiple angles. Topic clusters — which we cover in a dedicated guide — are the primary mechanism for demonstrating expertise to AI models.

Authoritativeness: external validation

Authoritativeness is earned when other trusted sources reference, link to, or acknowledge your content. For traditional SEO, this is measured through backlink profiles. For AI citation, the signals are somewhat different:

  • High-DA domains get more benefit of the doubt from AI citation algorithms, but this is not deterministic.
  • Your brand being referenced by authoritative sources — even without links — builds AI recognition of your entity.
  • Having an entity in Wikidata is one of the strongest authority signals available, particularly for organizations and public figures.
  • For local businesses, consistent Name/Address/Phone across directories is an authority signal AI models inherit from Google's knowledge graph.

Trustworthiness: the non-negotiable foundation

Trustworthiness is the most important E-E-A-T dimension for AI citation. Content that contains factual errors, unsupported claims, or manipulative patterns gets actively penalized. AI models that cite incorrect information suffer reputational consequences — so they are trained to be conservative about sources.

Key trust signals for AI citation include:

  • ✓Factual accuracy with linked sources for data claims
  • ✓Clear disclosure of commercial relationships (affiliate, sponsored content)
  • ✓Accessible privacy policy and terms of service
  • ✓HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate
  • ✓Contact information and organization details easily findable

E-E-A-T signals specifically for AI citation

While the four E-E-A-T dimensions translate well to AI evaluation, several implementation differences matter:

Measuring your E-E-A-T score

RankAsAnswer's Entity Authority Suite measures E-E-A-T signals across your domain and produces an entity identity score. This includes checking for Author Schema, Organization Schema, Wikidata presence, and the consistency of your brand entity signals across your pages.

E-E-A-T is a domain-level, not just page-level, signal

Even if a single page has excellent E-E-A-T signals, AI models evaluate the entire domain. A site with one great article surrounded by thin, low-quality content will still struggle with citations. Raise the floor across your entire site.
